Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a live-action film franchise based on Jeff Kinney's book series of the same name
The first installment of the family comedy was released in theaters in 2010, spawning three sequels and four animated films, with a fifth animated movie slated for late 2026 on Disney+

Based on the eponymous book series by Jeff Kinney, the first live-action film in the franchise premiered on March 19, 2010. In the original flick, Zachary Gordon stars as 11-year-old Greg Heffley, who records his middle school pitfalls in his journal as he schemes to become popular — and sees his BFF Rowley (Robert Capron) become the more well-liked one in the process.
Three sequels followed — Rodrick Rules (2011), Dog Days (2012) and The Long Haul(2017) — though none of the OG actors returned for the fourth installment, as they had outgrown the roles. (There have been four animated movies, with a fifth titled The Getaway set to launch on Disney+ in December 2026, per DTVA News.)
Much of the young cast remained in Hollywood, though some took breaks to experience young-adult milestones, like heading off to college.
Gordon has admitted that as he got older, he began to feel resentful toward his leading role, but he's come back around and now appreciates his breakthrough role.
"For the longest time, I resented it. I just wanted to fit in. I just wanted people to like me for me, and it wasn't until I matured and realized this is a huge gift and a blessing," he told Dan Zolot, co-host of the Zach Sang Showpodcast,in December 2025. "It allows you to connect with people that you've never met before."
Gordon added, "I am Greg. I'll always be Greg, and just because when I was younger, people didn't see me as Zach doesn't mean that now, as an adult, I can't take the time to appreciate that."
Below, see how the cast of Diary of a Wimpy Kid has aged and what they are up to now.

Gordon was born and raised in Oak Park, Calif. He appeared in a few films, including Georgia Rule (2007), National Treasure: Book of Secrets (2007) and Four Christmases (2008) and on shows like Desperate Housewives and 24 before being cast as Greg Heffley in Diary of a Wimpy Kid in 2009. He reprised the role for the 2011 and 2012 sequels.
The actor then landed roles on shows like Dead of Summer, The Good Doctor, Good Troubleand The Residentand appeared in 2021's Violet and 2024's Last Appeal. Gordon has also had a successful voice-acting career on animated series, notably as Gil in Bubble Guppies, and in video games like Mafia: Definitive Edition.
Gordon, who now goes by Zach, has been pursuing music. He released his debut single, "Time Bomb," in 2023 and played his first headlining show in L.A. in June 2026 (via Instagram).
In April 2024, Gordon reunited with his former Wimpy Kid costar Peyton List at Coachella. He captioned the Instagram slideshow of their hang, "Greg and Holly take Coachella 🎡🌴🔥."
A few months later, in September of that year, author Kinney captured Gordon and Capron for a reunion photo, writing on X (formerly Twitter), "These kids and their backwards hats and Mountain Dews and chocolate chip cookies. Good seeing you fellas."

Capron was cast as Rowley Jefferson, Greg's wholesome best friend, and played the role in the first three live-action films. The franchise was his big break, having only two credits before the original 2010 movie, including 2009's Bride Wars.
The Rhode Island-born actor kept landing roles, appearing in the movies The Way Way Back (2013), Annabelle Hooper and the Ghosts of Nantucket (2016) and The Polka King (2017) and on CBS' Elementary. He's also voiced characters in Frankenweenie (2012) and Tarzan (2013).
Though Capron looks different from Rowley, he noted that being typecast as the "chubby" kid was strange to navigate after he lost weight.
"I really thought I was going to be the male lead with the fat best friend," Capron told The New Yorker in January 2022. "But, once I was thin, Hollywood couldn't quite peg me."
He took time off from acting to attend Brown University, graduating in 2020 with a degree in modern culture and media/history.
Per his LinkedIn and TheNew Yorker, he's largely moved behind the camera. Capron was a writer's assistant on Disney+'s The Muppets Mayhem and has been an instructor with Actors for Autism since 2023. Capron is also a screenwriter, co-writing the short film Vial.

Devon Bostick played Greg's older brother, Rodrick Heffley, in the Wimpy Kid franchise from 2010 to 2012. He had many credits before landing the part — like many young Canadian actors, his resume included a stint on Degrassi: The Next Generation.
In March 2026, Bostick told Letterboxd that Rodrick Rules was "the most formative time" of his life.
"It was the first film where I was an adult on set as well, as an 18-year-old," he said. "And then I was sort of in the middle between these kids who were like 11, who I had worked with in the previous one, and then the parents, Steve Zahn and Rachael Harris."
He added, "On one side of the coin, it's awesome that it's resonated so much, and then on the other, you just feel so old every time someone's like, 'You were my childhood!' And I'm like, 'How old am I?' I'm super grateful that it is still going."
Bostick, who has a background in improv, has had continued success on-screen, starring in series such as The 100, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Most Dangerous Game andFUBAR, as well as films like Okja (2017), Oppenheimer (2023), War of the Worlds (2025) and Crime 101 (2026).

Karan Brar was in elementary school when he was one of 9,000 kids to try out for the role of Chirag Gupta.
There were three months of silence before he found out he got the part, which he reprised in the 2011 and 2012 sequels.
"I had never been on that kind of huge set. It was shocking, but I got used to it," Brar, then 11, told TheSeattle Times in March 2010.
He's seen plenty of big sets since. Brar went on to find success as Ravi Ross on the Disney series Jessie, and he joined the sitcom's spinoff,Bunk'd,for its first three seasons. (His Rodrick Rules and Dog Days costar, List, also had a recurring role on the series.)

After starring in the franchise, the Alabama native had roles in films like Mother's Day (2016), Apparition (2019), and Greyhound (2020).
He has largely traded acting for music. Russell has released a handful of singles, including 2024's "Corn and Kerosene" and a 2025 cover of "Atlantic City" with Gordon. Theformer Wimpy Kid costars have also shared videos of their jam sessions.
Russell told Lee Clarion in April 2023 that he's "always done music, and film just happened."
"I'm not giving one more attention than the other," he said. "You want to be taken seriously in both aspects, and you can't do that without acknowledging each project. The film [Diary of a Wimpy Kid] has given me a door to speak and preach, and I don't mind to wear its coattails out."
To wit, he hasn't completely disappeared from acting — he last starred on Blue Ridge: The Series from 2024 to 2025.
Russell has been engaged to Rachel Schumacher since January 2024, sharing the news on Instagram in a now-deleted post.
