Now, 12 years since its premiere, the series will bow with its eighth and final season — just as a spinoff, *Outlander: Blood of My Blood*, is getting started.

"What we want is a really authentic season of *Outlander*," said executive producer Matthew B. Roberts for **'s *Outlander* cover story. "We weren't going to try to make every episode a very special episode of *Outlander*. I wanted this to fit fully into the series, and I think we successfully have done that."

Season 7 ended on a heck of a cliffhanger, with Claire (Caitriona Balfe), now back in North Carolina, being struck by the possibility that Faith, the daughter she and Jamie (Sam Heughan) thought died at birth, might still be alive.

Roberts told EW that fans won't have to wait long to see how that twist plays out. "I didn't want to make fans wait halfway through the season to get the answers," he said, adding, "That one answer actually spawns about a thousand more questions, and those are what gets answered throughout the season."

Season 8 will also explore themes of family, and community, the latter of which will be tested when the couple come to discover their former home on Fraser's Ridge isn't as they left it. It's grown in their absence, with new leadership taking hold.**

"They're really surprised, when they come back, that they're not just starting over with their house, but they're actually starting over in terms of their place in the community," executive producer Maril Davis told EW.

The series' timey-wimey aspects will also factor in. After traveling to the present in season 7, Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and Roger (Richard Rankin) returned with a book, *The Soul of a Rebel*, that was penned by Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies), Claire's first husband. It reveals that Jamie dies in an upcoming battle, raising questions about whether or not history can be changed.**

"Just because it's on a page doesn't make it accurate, as we know," Roberts teased to EW. "Do they think they're going to go change history, or do they think that maybe history wasn't written correctly?"**

The official *Outlander* season 8 trailer arrived in late January, teasing a season packed with longing glances, smoke-choked battles, and musings on time and destiny.

In the clip, Jamie reckons with the revelations in Frank Randall's book and tells Claire that, if what it says about his death is true, that she should return to her own timeline. "This is my home," she says in response.

Against scenes of war and destruction, Claire declares, "When I first touched those stones, it wasn't a choice. And I don't know if it was fate or destiny, but what I do know is that I am meant to be here."**

Joining Heughan's Jamie and Balfe's Claire in season 8 are Skelton's Brianna and Rankin's Roger. "Really, in their hearts, they want to be with their family, which is the Frasers," Rankin told EW.

They'll also be joined by Young Ian (John Bell) and his new bride, Rachel (Izzy Meikle-Small), who's about to give birth. "He's ready and excited for fatherhood," Bell said of his character. "However, there's a bit of trepidation because of past events and worry over not just his baby, but his wife's safety, as well."

Other familiar faces you can expect to see are David Berry's Lord John Grey and Charles Vandervaart's William Ransom.

Kieran Bew, a veteran of series like *Warrior* (2019–2023) and *House of the Dragon* (2024), joins the season as Captain Charles Cunningham, who's taken control of Fraser's Ridge in Jamie's absence.

"On the surface, he's charming," Heughan said of Bew's character. "But Jamie's Spidey sense instantly clicks in, and we find there's definitely ulterior motives."

Other new additions include Frances Tomelty (*Catastrophe*) as Charles' mother, Elspeth Cunningham, and Carla Woodcock (*Such Brave Girls)* as Amaranthus Grey, a new member of the Grey family.
