Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are not planning an apology to Prince William and Kate Middleton, a source tells PEOPLE

The source dismisses a report claiming the Duke and Duchess of Sussex hope to make amends over their 2021 Oprah Winfrey interview as “nonsense”

PEOPLE has previously reported that Harry and William remain estranged, even as Harry has made some progress in his relationship with King Charles

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are not planning to apologize to Prince William and Kate Middleton, a source tells PEOPLE, disputing a new report about a purported apology plan.

The U.K.’s Express reported on Oct. 6 that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex hoped to apologize to the Prince and Princess of Wales over comments made during their 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, describing the reported move as part of a wider effort toward reconciliation.

A source close to Harry, 42, and Meghan, 45, tells PEOPLE that the claim is “nonsense.”

The outlet specifically claimed that the Sussexes planned to apologize over Meghan’s revelation during the interview that there had been “concerns and conversations” within the royal family about how dark Prince Archie’s skin might be before he was born.

The report comes amid renewed attention on the relationship between the two couples following Harry and Meghan’s return to the U.K. with their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5.

PEOPLE has previously reported that while Harry has made some progress in rebuilding his relationship with his father, King Charles, there has been no comparable thaw with William.

“There’s no movement, especially on William’s side,” a source previously told PEOPLE.

Harry has publicly said that he would like to reconcile with his family. In a May 2025 BBC interview, he said he would “love reconciliation,” while acknowledging the deep tensions that remained at the time.

Those tensions have played out over several years following Harry and Meghan’s departure from royal duties in 2020, their interview with Winfrey the following year, their Netflix docuseries and the publication of Harry’s memoir, Spare, in 2023.

The dynamic has taken on renewed significance since the Sussexes returned to Britain for an extended period.

“It’s been magnified,” a palace insider previously told PEOPLE. “When they were in California, and you gazed through the looking glass, you couldn’t see it so well, but it is right back in front of them.”

Harry has had contact with his father since returning. King Charles, 77, reunited with Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lilibet at Highgrove in July, before the family’s move back to the U.K., and PEOPLE has reported that Charles and Harry have spoken at least once since the Sussexes’ Aug. 26 arrival.

But William’s relationship with his younger brother remains unchanged.

Despite the continued estrangement, sources have not ruled out the possibility of the brothers’ relationship changing over time.

“In time,” one source previously told PEOPLE, “there is a chance it will all heal.”
