Some celebrity deaths are so unexpected or so devastating that they still impact fans years later. A while back, redditor DidiStutter11 asked, "What is a tragic celebrity story that you find so heavy?"Here are 18 of the most heartbreaking responses:1. "Naya Rivera. 💔 I can't imagine what her last moments were like or what her poor son witnessed. So heartbreaking."

In 2020, the 33-year-old actor disappeared in a lake. She'd rented a pontoon boat and gone out on Lake Piru with her four-year-old son, Josey. Three hours after they set sail, another boater found the boy alone, sleeping in the boat. Naya's ID and a life jacket believed to be hers were also found onboard. Josey told authorities that his mom had gone swimming but "did not come back up." Five days later, her body was recovered. Authorities believed that, while Naya and Josey were swimming, their unanchored pontoon began drifting, and she "mustered enough energy to get her son back into the boat, but not enough to save herself" before drowning.

In 2014, the 63-year-old comedy legend died by suicide. His publicist, Mara Buxbaum, told ABC News that he had been dealing with "severe depression of late" and had been seeking treatment. A few months after his death, Robin's autopsy revealed that he had undiagnosed Lewy body dementia (a brain disorder where proteins develop in the brain's nerve cells, leading to a decline in mental abilities and potential symptoms including visual hallucinations, rigid muscles, depression, trouble sleeping, and others).

According to his wife, Susan Schneider Williams, Robin experienced insomnia, restlessness, extreme anxiety she described as "terror," depression, a tremor in his left hand, body stiffness, slow movement, and cognitive changes.

After his death, Susan began working with the American Brain Foundation to help educate people about LBD.

3. "For me, it's the death of Aaliyah. She had such a promising future ahead of her. I still remember where I was when I heard the news about the plane crash; it just seemed so wrong and unreal."

In 2001, the music icon boarded a chartered plane in the Bahamas. It was supposed to take her and a few others to Miami after a two-day music video shoot. However, shortly after taking off, the small plane crashed. The landing gear and engine were torn away, and the wings "shattered on impact." There were nine people aboard, including the pilot. Aaliyah and five others died instantly, and the other three died from their injuries the following day. Her official cause of death was "severe burns and a blow to the head." It was later found that the charter company had only hired the pilot, Luis Antonio Morales, a few days before the tragedy. He wasn't certified to fly the plane, and he was found to have "cocaine in his urine and traces of alcohol in his stomach." Additionally, authorities believed that the plane had been overloaded by 700 lbs. Aaliyah was only 22.

In 1969, cult leader Charles Manson ordered several of his followers to go to the house that Sharon was renting and murder everyone there "as gruesome[ly] as you can." After breaking into the home, the cult members tied Sharon and four others together with ropes around their necks. A mere two weeks away from her unborn son's due date, Sharon begged them, "Please don't kill me. I just want to have my baby." She was stabbed 16 times, and one of the cult members dipped a towel in her blood and wrote "PIG" on the front door. Sharon was 26.

The Manson Family murdered four other people in her home that night.

The next night, the cult members killed grocery store executive Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary.

In 1971, Charles Manson, Susan Atkins, Leslie Van Houten, and Patricia Krenwinkel were convicted for their roles in the Tate-LaBianca killings. Their death penalty sentences were converted to life in prison the following year, when California abolished the death penalty.

In 2020, the Black Panther actor died of stage 4 colon cancer. He was 43. The official statement said, "Chadwick was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2016, and battled with it these last 4 years as it progressed to stage IV. A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much. From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, and several more — all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. It was the honor of his career to bring King T'Challa to life in Black Panther."

In 2020, the legendary 41-year-old NBA star and his 13-year-old daughter died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas. Two other teen girls, their family members, the pilot, and a basketball coach were also killed. They had been flying to a girls' basketball game. The Bryants' family assistant knocked on the door to tell Vanessa about the crash at the same time that TMZ reported the news. As Vanessa called her mom for help watching her two youngest daughters, "RIP Kobe" notifications flooded her phone.

Authorities refused to tell her anything over the phone, so, after picking up her oldest daughter, Natalia, from ACT prep class, she tried to get a helicopter ride to the crash site. However, the weather was so bad that a helicopter owner refused. So, Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka drove Vanessa and Natalia an hour and a half to the police station in Malibu.

Finally, after making her wait, the sheriff told Vanessa about the crash. She told him, "If you can't bring my husband and baby back, please make sure no one takes photographs of them. Please secure the area."

The sheriff assured her that the area was secure. However, she later sued the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, alleging that first responders had taken pictures from the crash site and shared them. According to the county's lawyers, the photos "were not publicly disseminated." In 2023, they settled for nearly $29 million. Additionally, in 2022, she was awarded $16 million in an invasion of privacy trial against the county, and she donated the proceeds to the Mamba and Mambacita Foundation.

7. "Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds."

In 2016, Carrie went into cardiac arrest while flying from London to LA. She later died at age 60 from sleep apnea and additional "undetermined factors." Traces of MDMA and heroin were later found in her system. Her daughter, Billie Lourd, told People that she "ultimately died" of her lifelong struggles with "drug addiction and mental illness." One day after Carrie's death, her mom, Debbie, had a stroke and died at age 84. Her son, Todd Fisher, told Variety, "She wanted to be with Carrie."

In 2016, Christina was shot by Kevin Loibl, a 27-year-old man who'd convinced himself that she was his "soulmate" and lost weight and got Lasik and hair plugs to impress her. He traveled to Orlando and killed her after a concert. She was only 22.

In 1997, on the very day the 30-year-old musician was set to start recording his sophomore album, he stopped off at a Mississippi River tributary. As "Whole Lotta Love" by Led Zeppelin played from a nearby stereo, he sang along and walked into the water. But then, a riverboat passed by, and its wake pulled Jeff beneath the water. Six days later, his body was recovered. Only one beer was found in his system, and his death was determined to be accidental.

The Disney Channel star died in 2019. In a statement, his family told ABC News that he "passed away in his sleep due to a seizure, which was a result of an ongoing medical condition for which he was being treated." Later testing revealed that he died of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. Cameron's family said, "The world is now undoubtedly without one of its brightest lights, but his spirit will live on through the kindness and compassion of all who knew and loved him." He was only 20.

Anna Nicole was only 17 when she first got married and 18 when she had her first child, Daniel. She later separated from her first husband and, after working several jobs, married 89-year-old oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall. But only 13 months after the wedding, her new husband died without naming Anna Nicole in his will. She lost the legal battle with his family. In 2006, she welcomed her daughter, Dannielynn, but a few days later, Daniel died of an accidental drug overdose in Anna Nicole's hospital room. Five months later, in early 2007, Anna Nicole also died of an accidental drug overdose. She was 39.

The 49-year-old Saturday Night Live legend was shot and killed in his sleep by his wife, Brynn Omdahl, in 1998. The couple had reportedly been arguing, and Phil "made it very clear that if she started using drugs again, that would end the relationship." When she escalated things, he withdrew and went to bed. Before 3 a.m., Brynn shot him three times while their two children were asleep in their rooms. Afterward, she called her friend Ron Douglas, went to his house, and told him what she'd done. Ron didn't believe her, but he convinced her to go home, and he followed her. At the house, he discovered Phil's body. While Ron called the police, Brynn locked herself in the bedroom with Phil's body. She died by suicide, lying next to him. Antidepressants, alcohol, and cocaine were later found in her system.

Rita Wilson, their family friend, told Entertainment Weekly, "The thing that freaks everyone out is that this was not them. He was a great dad; she was a really good mom. This is so uncharacteristic of how they were together."

In the public eye, Amy endured an eating disorder and addiction. The media's cruelty was relentless. For example, the Sun said that she should be dragged "by her egg-yellow hair round a ward at Great Ormond Street Hospital and [shown] the children fighting to stay alive. To hammer into her thick skull that she's lucky enough to have a healthy body and mind that she's wilfully choosing to destroy." Amy stopped using hard drugs and was working toward recovering from alcoholism, but in 2011, she died of accidental alcohol poisoning. She was only 27.

Her best friend, Tyler James, told the Times, "Amy was a girl in her 20s suffering from addiction, and everybody was a part of it. Everybody was watching it. When you go to rehab, you have to be the strongest you've ever been in your life, when you are the weakest you've ever been in your life. And she had to go through that in front of people. I want people to understand how hard that was for her. I want people to know what it was, to stop seeing her as this doomed person."

In 2008, the 28-year-old actor died of an accidental overdose. According to the New York City chief medical examiner's office, Heath "died as the result of acute intoxication ... resulting from the abuse of prescription medications." In a statement, his father, Kim Ledger, said, "While no medications were taken in excess, we learned today the combination of doctor-prescribed drugs proved lethal for our boy. Heath's accidental death serves as a caution to the hidden dangers of combining prescription medication, even at low dosage. ... To most of the world, Heath was an actor of immeasurable talent and promise. ... We knew Heath as a loving father, as our devoted son, and as a loyal and generous brother and friend."

Gerry Grennell, Heath's friend and dialect coach, who lived with him while he was shooting his final movie, told People that Heath had been dealing with emotional and physical exhaustion following an illness. He said, "He missed his family, he missed his little girl — he desperately wanted to see her and hold her and play with her ... He was desperately unhappy, desperately sad. [Heath] said, 'I got to stop [taking the pills], it's not helping. I'm not well; it's making me feel more upset.'"

Heath posthumously won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight.

Judith and her mother, Maria, were killed in 1988. Jozsef Barsi shot his wife and daughter in the head, poured gasoline over them, lit their bodies on fire, and then shot himself in their garage. Their neighbor told the LA Times that Maria had recently told her that when Jozsef drank, he became abusive and threatened her. Maria was considering filing for divorce and moving out, but she purportedly told the neighbor, "I can't, because he'll come after us and kill us, and he's threatened to burn the house down."

In 2016, the 27-year-old Star Trek actor was killed by his own Jeep Grand Cherokee. In his driveway, he got out of the car for a moment, and it rolled, pinning him against a security fence and a brick mailbox post. According to the Los Angeles County coroner's office, Anton seemingly didn't put the car in park properly. His death, caused by "blunt traumatic asphyxia," was "just one of those freak accidents." Previously, a government investigation found that the transmissions in his specific model of car were "not intuitive" and provided "poor tactile and visual feedback to the driver, increasing the potential for unintended gear selection."

In 2017, the Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman returned to his hotel room after playing a show. He died by suicide at age 52. A toxicology report found several drugs in his system. In a statement, Kirk Pasich, the family's attorney, said, "Chris, a recovering addict, had a prescription for Ativan and may have taken more Ativan than recommended dosages. The family believes that if Chris took his life, he did not know what he was doing, and that drugs or other substances may have affected his actions."

His wife, Vicky, told People, "Many of us who know Chris well, noticed that he wasn't himself during his final hours and that something was very off. We have learned from this report that several substances were found in his system. After so many years of sobriety, this moment of terrible judgment seems to have completely impaired and altered his state of mind. Something clearly went terribly wrong, and my children and I are heartbroken and are devastated that this moment can never be taken back. We very much appreciate all of the love we have received during this extremely difficult time and are dedicated to helping others in preventing this type of tragedy."

In 1989, the 21-year-old actor and model was waiting at her apartment for a messenger to deliver the script for The Godfather PartIII because she was set to audition for the role of Mary Corleone later that day. However, when her doorbell rang that morning, it wasn't the messenger — it was 19-year-old Robert John Bardo. For three years, Robert had been obsessed with Rebecca. After seeing her in a commercial for My Sister Sam, he started mailing presents and letters to the studio. When she replied to a letter, he decided to travel from Arizona to LA to visit her. However, gifts in hand, he was turned away by security at the studio, so he went home.

Then, when he watched Scenes From the Class Struggle in Beverly Hills, Rebecca's love scene changed his opinion of her.

For $300, he hired a PI to track down her address. A gun store owner refused to sell to him because of his history with mental illness, but his older brother purchased the gun for him.

When Rebecca first answered the door, he declared himself her biggest fan and showed her the letter and autographed picture she'd sent him, but she told him she needed to get ready for an interview. She shook his hand, and he left. However, after eating at a diner close by, he went back to her apartment, claiming he'd forgotten to give her something. Then, he shot and killed her.

He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The following year, California passed the first anti-stalking laws in the US. SAG lobbied for greater privacy restrictions, and the state introduced tighter restrictions on accessing personal information from the DMV (Robert's PI had obtained Rebecca's address through DMV records). Rebecca's parents began advocating for gun control.
