Over 1.7 million lbs. of sugar have been recalled in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas
The affected products could potentially contain wheat kernel contamination
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said recalled products should be returned to the place of purchase for a refund or disposed of
Over 1.7 million lbs. of sugar sold across eight states have been recalled.
On Sept. 21, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that batches of light brown and powdered sugar sold in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas could potentially contain wheat kernel contamination.
The sugar was sold under the brands United, Crystal Sugar and Good & Gather, according to News Nation and Parade. While the latter is associated with Target, the recall also includes products distributed through other retailers.
The affected sugar, sold in consumer- and commercial-sized options, has batch numbers MHD26223 through MHD26229 on its packaging, per the outlets.

The FDA said recalled products should be returned to the place of purchase for a refund. Alternatively, the products can be disposed of.
According to the FDA, food allergic reactions can “vary in severity from mild symptoms involving hives and lip swelling to severe, life-threatening symptoms, often called anaphylaxis, that may involve fatal respiratory problems and shock.”

United Sugar Producers and Refiners of Minneapolis initiated the voluntary recall of its sugar due to potential wheat kernel contamination on Aug. 19.
However, only this week did the FDA categorize the recall as Class II.
The categorization describes “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

Wheat has been recognized by the FDA as one of nine major food allergens since Congress passed the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA).
The FDA, Target Corp. and United Sugar Producers and Refiners did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Saturday, Sept. 26.
