‘70s rocker Patti Smith, 78, is the musical icon behind the 1975 release Horses, which helped pioneer the punk-rock-poetry fusion style that shaped the late 1970s music scene. Smith’s memoir Bread of Angels was released on November 4, 2025, and is already earning accolades and landing on prestigious year-end best-of lists that can make or break a new release. The memoir has earned the praise of book-club luminary Oprah Winfrey in its first month on bookshelves.

In a post shared to social media, Winfrey’s online magazine Oprah Daily, formerly known as O, The Oprah Magazine, released its list of the most anticipated memoirs of the season. Bread of Angels is one of just eight memoirs Oprah Daily is highlighting, and fans are all in on this highly anticipated book.

Oprah Daily’s Charley Burlock and Marion Winik write:

"Readers who fell in love with the scrappy young New York bohemian we met in Patti Smith’s National Book Award–winning memoir Just Kids will enjoy this deeper look into her life before and after those freewheeling years with famed photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. Her childhood in Philadelphia and New Jersey was shaped by frail health and her family’s very slim means; her poetic writing style makes this period feel almost like a Victorian novel. The artistic partnership she had with her husband, musician Fred Smith, and her friendships with Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Sam Shepard, William Burroughs, and other artists kept her on course through the choppy tides of public opinion that sometimes lionized her and sometimes went crazy over her underarm hair. Vintage snapshots and portraits add to the intimate mood."

Smith’s memoir finds itself in illustrious company as other top entertainers’ and writers’ memoirs join hers on Oprah’s list. The other books include Book of Life by Margaret Atwood, Nobody’s Girl by Virginia Roberts Giuffre, Simply More by Cynthia Erivo, We Did OK, Kid by Anthony Hopkins, The Uncool by Cameron Crowe, Wings by Paul McCartney, and Writing, Creativity and Soul by Sue Monk Kidd.

Hailed as a “punk poet laureate,” Patti Smith was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2007 alongside R.E.M., Van Halen, and The Ronettes.
