Omid Scobie claims King Charles is warming to Harry and Meghan

King Charles III has softened toward Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan. Still, the duke's estrangement from his older brother, Prince William, is unlikely ever to heal, according to a royal author known for his closeness to the couple.

Omid Scobie, a journalist once called the Sussexes' "cheerleader," made the remarks in Harry & Meghan: The Return of the Prince, a new ABC News Studios documentary about the couple's move back to Britain after six years in the United States. "I think we've seen with Charles things have moved forward and that iciness has thawed out," Scobi added.

"There's a warmth there. With William, I don't see it will ever change," Scobie said. He also rejected the idea that Kate, the Princess of Wales, could serve as a go-between.

"There's always this talk of Kate potentially being the peacekeeper, the one that could bring the two brothers together," Scobie said. "If I've learned anything over the years from covering them, it's that Kate has very little to do with that relationship between the brothers."

Erin Hill, a senior editor at People magazine, which has close ties to the Sussexes, said the Prince and Princess of Wales were sticking to tradition. "Palace insiders have told People that William and Kate, behind the scenes, have decided to take a very old-school royal approach to this," Hill said, summing it up as "keep calm, carry on, do the job."

"So right now, Harry and Meghan, they're not a priority for them, and they're very much looking to the future," she said. The program, part of the Impact x Nightline series, also features royal commentators including Robert Jobson, Victoria Murphy, and Alastair Bruce.

It explores whether reconciliation is possible as the 30th anniversary of Princess Diana's death nears next August. Harry and Meghan arrived in Britain on August 26, reversing their 2020 decision to step back from royal duties and move to California.

Their reasons for returning remain unclear, though speculation has ranged from wanting their children closer to their grandfather to raising the couple's public profile. The transition has been bumpy.

Harry and Meghan moved their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, to a different school after just two days because of security concerns during the school run. Tensions also rose after a letter, authorized by the king, informed government officials that the couple were "private citizens."

The Sussexes, who are awaiting a decision on taxpayer-funded security, reportedly prefer the term "public figures." Meanwhile, Diana's brother, Earl Spencer, has accused the king of gaslighting him in a new book. Buckingham Palace responded that "the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason."
