Nicolas Cage has responded publicly for the first time since Prime Video decided against renewing Spider-Noir. The Oscar-winner described the single season of his superhero drama as a complete artistic statement.

Cage issued a statement following the news that Prime Video would not proceed with a second season of the comic book adaptation. His reaction was notably philosophical rather than disappointed. “For me, one season is perfect, having said what I wanted to say with this dangerous, innovative, pop-art Spider-Man,” Cage said to Deadline. He added, “Onwards, upwards, inwards.”

The cancellation comes despite strong critical reception for the series, which was Cage’s first regular television role. Spider-Noir got a 92% critics score and 89% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and received 11 Emmy Award nominations, more than any other Prime Video series in 2026.

While the show performed well initially, pulling in 851 million viewing minutes in its first week according to Nielsen, it did not maintain the momentum of other Prime Video releases. The lavish production filmed both color and black-and-white versions, contributing to a high price tag that likely influenced the decision.

Season 1 did tell a largely complete story, which softened the blow for fans. Nicolas Cage had previously hinted at uncertainty about a renewal in an interaction with Variety, saying that “whether it happens or not, all of us achieved what we set out to do, and it works on its own.”

The show followed Ben Reilly, a private investigator in 1930s New York forced to confront his past. Cage drew inspiration from classic Hollywood for the role. Fan response to the cancellation trended toward anger.

One viewer on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “WILD how streaming works now — two shows can win Emmys, pull big numbers, get praised everywhere, and still get tossed in the trash because a boardroom spreadsheet said ‘eh.'”
