MS NOW anchor Alex Witt is planning to leave the channel after nearly 30 years

She joined the network in 1999 and most recently served as the host of Alex Witt Reports on weekends

Witt's departure comes as MS NOW makes changes to its weekend programming

More than three decades after Alex Witt joined MS NOW, she is bidding farewell to the network.

The veteran anchor, 65, who hosted the weekend show Alex Witt Reports, is set to leave the channel later this summer, PEOPLE confirms.

Witt joined MS NOW in 1999 as a news anchor. Throughout her 27 years with the network, she has anchored across its dayparts, covering election cycles and reporting from overseas. She reported on 9/11, on the ongoing war in Ukraine, and closely followed Capitol Hill.

In 2011, Witt launched her weekend afternoon show Alex Witt Reports.

Rebecca Kutler, president of MS NOW, said in a memo to staff, in part, that Witt "shared with us her plans to conclude her tenure with the companylater this year, following an extraordinary career."

"A beloved longtime member of our MS NOW family, Alex has been a continued, trusted and steady presence for our audiences," added Kutler. "... Having anchored more hours on MS NOW than any other anchor in our network’s history, Alex has guided our viewers through many of the most significant stories that have defined a generation, including the 2003 Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, reporting from Ground Zero immediately following the tragic 9/11 terrorist attacks, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the devastating impact of Hurricane Katrina, the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and more."

Kutler added, "We thank Alex for her endless contributions to the network and will have more opportunities to celebrate her in the coming months."

Her departure comes as MS NOW makes shifts in its weekend programming. Starting on Sunday, June 28, MS NOW will move away from regular live hours after 6 p.m. ET on weekends and instead incorporate taped video podcasts hosted by MS NOW's Nicolle Wallace and Chris Hayes, as well as Crooked Media.

“Crooked on MS NOW” will include shows like Runaway Country with Alex Wagner, Strict Scrutiny, Lovett or Leave It, Assembly Required with Stacey Abrams, Offline with Jon Favreau and more.

MS NOW, formerly known as MSNBC, will also cancel its new series The Weekend: Primetime after Saturday, June 27. Antonia Hylton, current co-anchor of the series, will be anchoring the afternoon hours on Saturdays and Sundays in the coming months.

Weekend hosts Ayman Mohyeldin, Catherine Rampell and Elise Jordan will remain with the network. Peter Alexander will join MS NOW as an anchor of the 11 a.m. weekday hour.

The network will continue to air 20 hours of live programming each weekend.
