Duke Nicholson leads a new crime thriller as a deputy trying to prove himself. If only he hadn’t lost track of a corpse.
The 27-year-old actor, who has followed in his grandfather Jack Nicholson’s footsteps, takes on his first lead role in The Deputy, in theaters, digital and on demand Sept. 25.
Directed by Matt Sukkar and written by Carlo Bernard, the movie boasts a starry supporting cast that includes William H. Macy, Tiffany Haddish, Stephen Dorff, Billie Lourd and Julia Fox. A new trailer shows glimpses of Duke’s rookie Deputy Toby Sawyer running into all the above on his quest to recover a dead body.

After Macy’s Chief Kreuger orders Toby to guard a corpse that then disappears, the deputy “launches a frantic search that unearths decades of small-town rot,” per an official synopsis. “Pressured to look the other way, Toby finds a lone ally in Deputy Amanda Jackson (Haddish) and sets his sights to unravel a lethal web of corruption to clear his name in a town where secrets stay buried.”

“Why weren’t you watching the body?” asks a fellow officer played by Dorff in the new trailer. “Sheriff’s gonna be pissed,” responds Nicholson resignedly. “Oh, you think?!” quips Dorff.
Elsewhere, Chief Kreuger can be heard telling Toby, “I know how bad you want to get put on salary full-time. I just need you to show me a little more rigor.”
Nicholson, who made a feature film debut in Jordan Peele’s Us, recently appeared in this past June’s In the Hand of Dante. Influencer Devon Lee Carlson announced her engagement to the actor on June 17.
The Deputy is in theaters, digital and on demand Sept. 25.
