Attention digital creators! YouTube has announced a major update for its view count format, giving creators a new way to showcase their content’s reach.

Starting August 24, the platform is axing its minimum-watch requirement for long-form videos, podcasts and livestreams, meaning that public views will be counted as soon as a video begins playing, ie, from the first frame.

Check out the official announcement:

''Beginning on 8/24/2026, a view will be counted the moment a video begins to play—from the very first frame. This standard will now apply globally across all formats.''

The platform's first-frame view count was previously reserved for short-form content but it will now be applicable for long-form videos globally. This also aligns the platform's view count system with other social media platforms like TikTok, X and Instagram, which register views from the moment a video is played.

More on this in our story.

What is new YouTube view count format?

Starting August 24, your YouTube video views will reach new heights. This is all because of the platform's new view count format, which will count a view from the moment a video is played/from the first frame. Earlier, the platform adopted a 30-second rule, meaning counts (on long-form videos) were only considered if viewers reached the minimum viewing threshold, making it difficult for creators to reach higher numbers if a viewer chose to stop the video in the first few seconds.

After this new update, creators' YouTube videos will show more views, even if a video autoplays or a user immediately scrolled past it and swiped to the next video.

The new view count format aligns with the platform's Shorts, the three-minute videos that use a vertical format, which has used this first-frame count since March 2025. It looks like the platform is adopting symmetry across all formats, with Shorts, long-form videos, livestreams and podcasts all following the new first-frame rule.

How will the new view count format help digital creators?

For digital creators, the most immediate benefit will be faster-growing public view counts. With even an initial play registering as a count on a YouTube video, creators will naturally see larger numbers attached to their videos, which demonstrate their content's reach and might help them secure better deals when approaching brands and sponsors.

YouTube's new view count format will provide creators a stronger visibility metric and a better picture of how often their content is seen.

However, since the platform knows that the original view count format (the 30-second rule) is useful data for creators to understand how many users were actually watching their content, the original view metric will be included as "Engaged views" in their analytics under advanced mode. This will allow creators to measure viewers who actually engaged with their content, making it easy for them to make changes. This feature also ensures that YouTube's new view count format will not change creator earnings or Partner Program eligibility.

The platform’s view-counting system will take effect on August 24.
