"Frankenstein" may not have won gold for best picture, but the film's costume and makeup departments got their due at the 98th annual Academy Awards in Los Angeles Sunday, March 15.
Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro's retelling of Mary Shelley's novel had earned nine nods and was in running for the night's biggest prize – best picture – alongside "Sinners," "The Secret Agent," and "Blue Moon," "Bugonia," "F1: The Movie," "Frankenstein," "Hamnet," "One Battle After Another," "Sentimental Value" and "Train Dreams." The film's star, Jacob Elordi, had also earned a nod for best actor in a supporting role.
Del Toro's "definitive retelling of Mary Shelley's genre-defining novel of life and death" is described as "an epic drama about what it means to be human, to crave love, and seek understanding."
