A new Halloweentown film is in early development

PEOPLE has learned that a fifth movie is in the works, 20 years after the last installment

The first film arrived on Disney Channel in 1998

Disney is planning on giving Halloweentown fans all treats and no tricks with a new installment.

Another Halloweentown film is in early development at Disney Channel and Disney+, PEOPLE confirms.

The fifth entry in the Disney Channel Original Movie franchise’s announcement comes 20 years after the most recent installment, 2006’s Return to Halloweentown. The script is being developed by Lily Houghton and Ryan Koehn and the movie will again be based on characters from Paul Bernbaum, with plot details under wraps.

The Wrap was the first to report the news on Thursday, Oct. 22.

According to Disney, the franchise has brought in an estimated 160 million hours streamed on Disney+ globally, and the original film — released in 1998 — ranked among the top 10 most-watched Halloween movies in October 2025.

Still a spooky favorite nearly three decades after its debut, the Halloweentown films initially starred Kimberly J. Brown as Marnie Piper, Judith Hoag as Gwen Cromwell Piper, Joey Zimmerman as Dylan Piper and the late Debbie Reynolds as Aggie Cromwell. The fourth film, released in 2006, featured Sara Paxton taking over as Marnie.

The franchise has had four previous films: 1998’s Halloweentown, 2001’s Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge, 2004’s Halloweentown High, and 2006’s Return to Halloweentown.

Reynolds died in 2016 at age 84. Earlier this month, Reynolds’ granddaughter, American Horror Story star Billie Lourd told PEOPLE at PaleyFest NY 2026 that the first film is among her “favorite movies of all time.” When asked about her opinion on fans wanting a prequel, Lourd said she would be willing to star.

“I’m available. I’m so available. I would absolutely love to do that,” she said. “One hundred percent, not even consider. I’m like, ‘Sign me up. When do we start?’”

She added that she had been “obsessed” with the franchise throughout her childhood, adding that she wants her children — son Kingston Fisher, 6, and daughter Jackson Joanne, 3 —to check out the films.

“I’m gonna bribe them with candy and popsicles and make them watch it because it’s one of my favorite movies of all time,” Lourd said. “Like [if] they would remake it, I wanna be in it. Aggie Cromwell is one of the most iconic characters ever.”
