Primetime marks Lipnicki’s first major movie role in decades

Remember that glasses-wearing kid from Jerry Maguire? Well, this is him now.

Thirty years after he made his acting debut at age 5 in the 1996 film starring Tom Cruise and Renée Zellweger, Jonathan Lipnicki made a rare red carpet appearance at the premiere of his latest movie, Primetime.

On Wednesday, Sept. 23, the 35-year-old actor posed alongside director Lance Oppenheim at the Los Angeles premiere of the film, which follows a character inspired by To Catch a Predator host Chris Hansen (Robert Pattinson) in 2006, during the height of the Dateline NBC segment’s success.

Lipnicki plays a dark role in the thriller, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Another former child star, Skyler Gisondo, stars in Primetime as a decoy who lures potential child predators into encounters where Pattinson’s character, his team and law enforcement are waiting.

Per THR, Lipnicki stars in the film as a character known by his screen name, Crazyfrog73, who gets caught in a compromising situation after pursuing Gisondo’s decoy.

Of his decision to take on the role as a child predator in his first major film role in decades, the former child star told the publication, “As actors, we pray for dark material and for things we can really sink our teeth into.”

“At the end of the day, you have to ask yourself, ‘Am I as courageous an artist as I say I am?’ I had to answer that question, and I was courageous enough to take the plunge,” added Lipnicki.

Beyond Jerry Maguire, Lipnicki is known for his major roles in 1999’s Stuart Little, 2000’s The Little Vampire and 2002’s Like Mike.

He has continued to act over the years, making appearances in TV series and starring in independent films and L.A. stage productions.

Lipnicki also reflected on his upbringing in the spotlight while speaking with THR, stating, “From my perspective, when you come from being a child actor, so much depends on your parents. I was fortunate: My parents were great, I went to public school and had a normal childhood, as normal as it could be with this extra thing attached to it.”

“I remember press junkets for Stuart Little, when journalists would ask me if I was going to do drugs or whether something bad had happened to me,” Lipnicki further recalled to the outlet. “Growing up, there was a lot of pressure not to become a train wreck. People would say, ‘Don’t do this. You’ll ruin your reputation. You’ll ruin your life. You’ll be just like these other people.’ They painted those people as train wrecks and terrible examples, but they’re human beings, and it’s sad to see that.”

“For me, taking this role felt like letting go of that pressure,” he continued, referring to his Primetime part. “I’ve always been concerned about making mistakes and worried about what other people think of me. This role was part of saying, ‘I have no control over what people are going to think, and I’m not going to concern myself with that anymore.’ ”

Last year, Lipnicki opened up to PEOPLE about his Hollywood journey, admitting that the jump from child acting to adult acting was a little rough.

“It’s totally fine to say I’m not where I want to be career-wise,” the actor said while speaking about his role in TBS’ The Joe Schmo Show.

When it comes to acting, Lipnicki explained, “This is the thing I want to do for the rest of my life, and I think you just have to believe it’s going to happen and do everything in your power to take action in the right direction.”

“And I pray every night for clarity on where I need to go, and I’m confident the best is yet to come for me,” he added to PEOPLE at the time. “And I think you just have to believe that. If you’re going to pursue this, you’re doing yourself a disservice not to dream big.”

Primetime is now in theaters.
