Dog The Bounty Hunter's stepson arrested in teen son's shooting death

More than six months after Dog the Bounty Hunter's step-grandson died in a shooting, Florida authorities have arrested the child's father in connection with the death.

The Collier County Sheriff's Office in Naples, Florida, on Feb. 3 arrested 39-year-old Gregory Anthony Zecca on charges of aggravated manslaughter of a child with a firearm and using a firearm while under the influence. The aggravated manslaughter charge carries a potential penalty of life in prison, according to the sheriff's office.

Zecca's 13-year-old son, Anthony, died July 19, 2025. Duane "Dog" Chapman has been married to Zecca's mother, Francie Chapman, since 2021.

In a Feb. 5 statement shared with USA TODAY, Zecca's defense attorney, Donald Day, said, "This case is very difficult for the entire family and we will work within the framework of the criminal justice system for a successful resolution."

Joseph Lesniak, a lawyer for the Chapmans, issued a statement Feb. 3 that said, "This remains a devastating family tragedy. We believe Greg loved his son deeply, and that this was a tragic accident — one that has left many lives permanently changed, especially Anthony’s, and Greg’s.

"The Chapmans continue to grieve Anthony’s loss and ask for privacy and compassion for everyone affected," the statement continued. "We respect the ongoing investigation by the Collier County Sheriff’s Office and the court process, and we will not litigate this matter in the media. Because this is now pending, we have no further comment at this time."

Sheriff's office: Dog the Bounty Hunter's stepson, Gregory Zecca, 'impaired by alcohol' at the time of shooting

According to the Collier County Sheriff's Office's Feb. 3 statement, Gregory Zecca allegedly drank alcohol over several hours at a local establishment, bought additional alcohol and later used alcohol and marijuana at a friend's home.

Authorities said Zecca repeatedly handled a firearm in the child's presence, practicing drawing it from his waistband and dry-firing, or pulling the trigger of an unloaded firearm to simulate firing. The firearm had initially been rendered safe by removing the magazine and clearing a live round from the chamber, per the sheriff's office.

At some point, authorities said, the magazine was reinserted and a round chambered. That is when authorities said Gregory Zecca discharged a single shot, allegedly fatally striking Anthony Zecca.

Authorities said the toxicologist concluded Gregory Zecca was impaired by alcohol; his blood-alcohol concentration was allegedly approximately 0.116 during the shooting — nearly twice the legal limit allowed to drive a car.

Gregory Zecca's arraignment is March 2.

On Feb. 4, Collier County Judge Deborah Cunningham determined Zecca would not be released on bond for the manslaughter charge prior to a Feb. 10 pretrial detention hearing.
