Dane Cook is opening up about the shocking discovery that his half-brother, Darryl McCauley, stole millions of dollars from him, as well as the warning their mother gave him about his brother before her death.
In the new documentary Funny Money: The Dane Cook Story, arriving on Netflix Friday, Nov. 6, Cook, 54, reflects on his rise to fame and “his crash at the hands of the person he trusted most.” He reveals that two years before McCauley, 61, was arrested and charged with embezzling $12 million from him, their mother, Donna Cook, who died of colon cancer in 2006, warned him and his siblings about their brother.
“I never saw [Darryl] cry, even when our mom was sick. He always stayed very calm,” Cook’s sister, Courtney Cook, says in the documentary. (Through his mom, the comedian also has a half-sister, Kelly Amann, who shares a dad with McCauley.) “I don’t wanna say that my mom didn’t fully trust Darryl, but before she passed, she did say to Dane, like, ‘You watch out for your brother.’ She had this inkling about something.”

Cook says his mother, whom he called “his compass,” had a feeling something wasn’t right. “She had a sense. And she didn’t want to rain on the parade ‘cause I was happy… even against what she told me and warned me of him, she just wanted us to have that camaraderie,” he says.
Despite his mom’s reservations about her eldest son, Cook says, she had one final wish for her children. “Her dying wish: Please, the four of you, be there for each other,” he recalls.
Just 10 days after their mother’s death, the siblings received another devastating blow. Cook’s father and McCauley’s stepfather, George Cook, revealed he had been diagnosed with cancer. He died shortly afterward.

“Dane was angrier. He was depressed. It was like his reason for going on was gone,” McCauley’s ex-wife, Erika McCauley, says in the documentary. She was sentenced to two and a half years in prison in connection to her husband’s crimes. “Darryl changed. He got depressed too, and he and Dane weren’t as close,” she adds.
McCauley was arrested in 2008 and charged with stealing $12 million from Cook while serving as his business manager. In 2010, he pleaded guilty to larceny, embezzlement and forgery and was sentenced to six years in prison. The court also ordered him to repay the $12 million to Cook.
As of November 2023, McCauley was reportedly making restitution payments of just $50 per month. At the time, he was working as a FedEx driver. According to the film, McCauley had repaid just $3,900 by 2024, leaving an outstanding balance of $12,088,130.34.

For the documentary, Cook returned to the courtroom where his brother had been convicted 14 years earlier. Reflecting on their family history and the betrayal, he says, “Look at us. We’re the result of our fathers. We were supposed to be examples of something new and improved.”
He adds that he was still searching for some acknowledgment of what had happened: “I’m looking for anything. One iota of remorse.… A shark with beautiful blue eyes. I didn’t know him. My brother was not in the room.”
