Aubrey Plaza is stepping into a new chapter: motherhood. Representatives for the Parks and Recreation star have confirmed that she’s expecting her first child with actor Christopher Abbott.

The two knew each other for years—and worked together at least twice—before their relationship turned romantic, but they’ve kept things so private that many fans hadn’t even realized they were together. If you’re wondering why Abbott looks so familiar, it’s because you’ve most likely seen him on the stage and the screen before.

Abbott is an actor who’s worked in television, film, and theater. He’s currently starring in Broadway’s Death of a Salesman alongside Nathan Lane and Laurie Metcalf, but he’s had a range of movie roles too, including Poor Things, The Testament of Ann Lee, Wolf Man, and Black Bear (in which he co-starred alongside Plaza).

Along with film, he’s appeared in various TV roles, most notably as Charlie Dattolo on Girls and in the 2019 miniseries Catch-22. He’s also set to star in Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of John Steinbeck’s East of Eden opposite Florence Pugh.

So, when did Plaza and Abbott first meet and begin dating? Here is a look back at their relationship timeline, from co-stars to expecting parents.

They’re both cast in the movie Black Bear2019

Aubrey Plaza and Christopher Abbott first cross paths when they are cast in the psychological thriller Black Bear. Plaza stars as Allison, a filmmaker who retreats to a remote lake house run by a couple (played by Abbott and Sarah Gadon) for inspiration. The three soon find themselves in a twisty, tumultuous love triangle.

Plaza and Abbott attend the Sundance Film Festival premiere of their film, Black Bear, alongside co-star Sarah Gadon. The three walk the red carpet together and also appear on a panel to discuss the new movie.

The co-stars are just friends at this point, as Plaza is in a relationship with Jeff Baena, whom she began dating in 2011. Plaza and Baena marry a year later, in 2021, in a spontaneous backyard wedding during the COVID-19 pandemic.

They star in the Off-Broadway show Danny and the Deep Blue Sea.Fall 2023

Plaza and Abbott reunite as co-stars, but this time on the stage in a two-person play. The two are cast in the Off-Broadway revival of Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, which marks Plaza’s stage-acting debut.

They star as Danny and Roberta, a couple from the Bronx who are in an emotional, complicated, and sometimes tumultuous relationship.

In a 2023 New York Times interview, the two actors open up about working together on stage. “He cares, but he also doesn’t care; it’s the best recipe for me for a scene partner,” Plaza says. “It’s fun and it’s also good and it’s also safe. I like to just throw things out the window also and laugh and mess around and not take it so seriously. It’s a hard combo to come by.”

Abbott says, “We’re both unafraid to be ugly and weird and strange.”

Talking about their dynamic in the two-person production, he says, “We’re doing this play every night for an audience, but I think you also have to do it for each other. We want to entertain the audience, but I personally want to entertain Aubrey.”

“I guess I like to entertain him as well,” Plaza adds.

Danny and the Deep Blue Sea begins previews on October 30, 2023, before officially running from November 13, 2023, through January 13, 2024.

They spark romance rumorsJuly 1, 2025

According to a DeuxMoi post, Plaza and Abbott are spotted together in upstate New York, at The Chatham Berry Farm, which is about 2.5 hours out of the city.

A source tells the outlet that Plaza “was rubbing his back, and they were sitting very close to each other at a picnic table.” The cozy sighting fuels dating speculation, especially since the two are reportedly seen with Abbott’s sister and children, making it a family outing.

The outing comes six months after Plaza is faced with the tragic death of her estranged husband, Jeff Baena, in January 2025. (The two were no longer together at the time of his passing, having quietly separated months earlier, around September 2024.)

Plaza and Abbott attend a New York Knicks game at Madison Square Garden. Though they’re not photographed together at the event, Plaza appears courtside in several social media posts.

The couple is expecting their first baby together!April 7, 2026

Plaza and Abbott are expecting their first child together! Plaza’s rep confirms the news to People, and a source says, “It was a beautiful surprise after an emotional year,” adding that “they feel very blessed.”

The baby is reportedly due in the fall.
