Anna Faris exclusively tells PEOPLE that returning to the Scary Movie franchise after two decades was a “healing” experience
“We got to be back together again — and that in and of itself is, for me, a personal celebration,” she said
The actress also discussed her recent Candy Crush takeover at a Los Angeles Clippers game, during which she made a surprise on-court appearance dressed as the game’s Bubblegum Troll
Anna Faris is reflecting on how much has changed since she first stepped foot in Stevenson County.
Two decades after she last appeared as Cindy Campbell in the Scary Movie franchise, the 49-year-old actress tells PEOPLE that she was “shocked and immediately thrilled” to learn she would be reprising her iconic role in the upcoming sixth Scary Movie.
“I couldn't believe it,” she says. “I couldn't believe that there was a world where I would be feeling so good about doing Scary Movies — not just good, great.”
“It's a little, I wish I had a better word, but healing,” she continues. “We got to be back together again. And that in and of itself is, for me, a personal celebration.”

Indeed, the Wayans brothers — Marlon, Shawn and Keenen Ivory Wayans — have also returned to the franchise for the first time since Scary Movie 2.
“It felt like the Wayans Brothers were casting me,” Faris says. “And this time, I got to thank them and feel like I wasn't gonna get fired, you know?”
Beyond her return to the iconic horror-spoof franchise, the Overboard actress was recently tapped to go undercover as a Candy Crush mascot before revealing her true identity during a takeover of the March 31 L.A. Clippers game at the Intuit Dome.
“They asked me to come and join them as Bubblegum Troll,” Faris says. “And so I am wearing a wild costume, and I get to essentially become part of a game that I love to play.”

Although Faris loves tapping into her inner child by playing Candy Crush — especially while waiting for her and Chris Pratt’s son, Jack, to get out of practice for whatever sport he’s into at the time — she’s found that she’s matured in the way she acts on a movie set.
“I was so quiet and so intimidated in the first two,” she recalls of filming the earlier Scary Movie films. This time around, she says that “it felt like I got to pay more attention. I did get to involve myself more. I did feel comfortable making small talk and having banter and doing what normal people do — as opposed to, you know, just hiding in the corner, hoping that no one will notice me.”
“I feel so just lucky that I've been able to give joy to people,” she adds. “It's the best gift. I feel like I'm finally mature enough to recognize that.”
As for what fans can expect for when the latest Scary Movie finally hits the big screen on June 5? Following her hiatus from the franchise, Faris is confident that audiences will get nothing less than “a really good time.”
“I think we delivered,” she emphasizes. “I hope the audience feels that way. I am really excited to promote it and talk about it because I believe in it so much. I hope they can have a great effing time with their friends and family, just like they did back in 2000.”
