WWE Hall of Famer AJ Styles has clarified his current role in NXT after his recent comments led to speculation that he had become a full-time coach at the WWE Performance Center.
Styles retired from in-ring competition earlier this year. Nevertheless, he is still involved with WWE behind the scenes. The Phenomenal One may not officially consider himself a coach. However, he admitted that he is enjoying the opportunity to work with young talent.

Styles discussed his current role on the latest episode of The AJ Styles Show. He made it clear that he has not taken a permanent coaching job in NXT.
“Let me clear this up, by the way. One of our coaches had to get knee surgery. I have now taken his place until he’s back, I am not a coach, per se; that’s down here every week. I am just filling in until he’s back. That’s it,” Styles explained.
Even though the role is only temporary, he has been having a lot of fun working with the wrestlers. Styles also explained that he wants to make training more useful and practical while still teaching the basics the wrestlers already know.
“And I’m going to tell you guys, I’m actually having a lot of fun with it. And I’m trying to make everything that we do very, very practical. Because this is what I see going on, so we’re going to do this and this right here and make sense of why you’re doing it,” Styles added.

One of Styles’ main goals is to help young wrestlers understand why they are doing certain drills and movements. Rather than having them simply repeat exercises, he wants them to understand how those skills can be used during actual matches.
Styles also wants to keep training from becoming boring.
“I want to see your footwork. But, little things like that…And I’m changing stuff a little bit, because the more you do the same thing over and over, the less you want to come to class and work hard. Because it gets redundant. So I’m trying to change things up a little bit but not take away from what they already know. First of all, doing something you don’t know how to do is always harder. And so when we change it up, it’s harder for the talent, also a little bit more exciting and keeps you interested,” Styles said.
Styles has already started helping outside the Performance Center as well. Recently, he helped produce the NXT Underground match between Kendal Grey and Lola Vice.
